Number 1

Numero Uno The White Stripes - Icky Thump

Didn't know how else to do it . . . . my vote is based on number of spins. Icky Thump went round and round my cd player for a good long while, and it's still in the mix. Jack White is a lyrical savant of sorts. So simple, so clever . . . . all coming from the mind of a creative workhorse. This record has some very borderline 'silly' songs, but they keep it legit and baja fresh like it's mostly south of the border.
As for Meg . . . . acute anxiety? I'd be a little anxious too if the devil were staring over my shoulder. And sex tape scandel . . . . don't believe everything you read on the internet.

#4
Beirut - The Flying Club Cup
If Ringo and Jens Lekman trained a young vocalist and sent him on the road with Sufjan and Gogal Bordella . . . . . you might have Beirut

#3
The Go Team! - Proof of Youth
Love these guys. Feel like I'm watching the a-team every time I listen. Plus the virtual rapping with some heavy hitters from the late 70's/early 80's is insanely good.

#2
LCD Sound System - Sounds of Silver
James Murphy gets mucho respect, especially now that I know he can play some sick beats with the sticks. Incredible layering and repetative but strong lyrics

Deerhoof - Friendship Opportunity
tiny Japanese woman with experimental beats and loops. Worthy.

Panda Bear - Person Pitch

If you like the mamas and papas vs. electronic folk then this is your next purchase.

#7 Bloc Party - A Weekend in the City

Guilty pleasure. Sucker for creative beats. Not so much a sucker for thick english accents, but these guys have their time and place.

music-map

Not a top 10 list, but I stumbled on this just a few minutes ago and was blown away. Go to the site, input one of your favorite artists and it will create a great visual map of other artists that are similar, or that you might also enjoy.

Not sure what the parameters are for this, or how he initially set up the program to work, but it is very interesting.

Enjoy -

My Top Picks for '07

Hello fellow DJ Readers (i.e. Hayes). I've been enjoying the daily posts from Mr. Trotter. In fact, the first thing I do every morning is merge onto the Information Superhighway and soak it in while Hayes drops his musical knowledge. #8

#8. Arcade Fire "Neon Bible"
I know that some of you (actually I'm pretty convinced that no one is reading this) are much bigger Arcade Fire fans than I am. Haven't given Spirit If . . . . enough spins to challenge AF for the Canadian slot on my list, but this will do. Huge sound, huge personality to this record. If I hadn't seen them live it wouldn't have made my 10. Sorry.
