My Last Mix-Tape

No one is going to read this . . . but then again, no one is going to listen to every word of your best mix tape either. I've made a few in my time, and the following 20 songs complete the 'Only Mix-Tape I Should Have Ever Made.'
This one's for me, but I'm inviting you to take my glasses and see the world of music as I've seen it for the last 24 years. I'll stand by everyone of these songs, and would be happy to argue anything about their merit and/or meaning. So what do they mean to me . . . . well here goes:

1. "You're Not Very Well" Charlatans U.K.
Thriller was my first tape and I still think that's pretty cool. "Some Friendly" by the Charlatans was my CD. I knew that I'd only have one chance to buy 'my first CD,' and I blew it on these guys. I was in high school, my bro was in college. He liked the Charlatans, so did I.

2. "Close to Me" The Cure
I was in a Radio and TV class in high school. Every one of us had to 'play DJ,' roll out some chit-chat and spin one track. My voice was lame and I spun 'Fortunate Son' by CCR. Some girl with Doc Martens, black hair and a ton of mascara rocked 'Close to Me.' I thought I hated The Cure. This song changed everything.

3. "Bats in the Belfry" Dispatch
When you see a band so many times that you can call their encore and still be blown away, you know they're in your top five. If I could only listen to 5 albums for the rest of my life, this album would make the list . . . . and forget Pete Townsend. I still dream of jumping off an amp like Chad Urmston.

4. "Mirror Song" Live
Ed Kowalczyk and his boys were much better when they were young, blue collared rockers from Pennsylvania. Before Throwing Copper killed this band, this album gave me plenty to think about.

5. "Have You Seen Me Lately?" Counting Crows
My wife loves these guys, and I must admit . . . I'm a fan too. I tried to leave them off but I'll join Adam in a sing-a-long every time I hear this track. The original is horrific, but they've created an incredible 'cover' of their own song. Never seen that before, but I'm not a Phish fan either.

6. "This Ain't Living" G. Love & Special Sauce
They came to Davidson in '94 and played in front of an empty gym. I was unimpressed, but "Yeah, It's That Easy" became an album that I spun more than any other. One of the only songs I've ever written (Stick it to the Man) is based off this song. It continues to suck, but one day I hope to play it as smooth as G and Jasper.

7. "Half the Man" Jamiroquai
He was my Tracy Chapman. I couldn't believe Jay K was a man. I made my way to a 70's party in 1999 and I brought 'Return of the Space Cowboy' because I couldn't stand the thought of dancing to 'Brick House.' Jamiroquai burned that place down.

8. "Man in a Suitcase" The Police
The greatest 3 piece of all times. This track could be my favorite from Gordon, Stu and Andy. Sting was like Larry David at this point in his career. He could make an amazing song out of absolutely nothing. I did end up seeing these guys at Red Rocks, and it improved my opinion of the band . . .

9. "Son of Byford" Run D.M.C.
Deacon D.M.C. "Baptized" me in Salt Lake at a small club by throwing a bottle of water on the crowd. These guys changed music for my generation. John Paul Sperling brought 'Raising Hell' to my sixth grade class and played it during our Wednesday art lesson. I brought 'The White Album.' We both thought we were cool, and in retrospect . . . we were.

10. "Deeper Shade of Soul" Urban Dance Squad
Like Panoff is to 'People Under the Stairs,' so am I to UDS. Self proclaimed 'Originators of Rap-Rock,' I guess they gave us Fred Durst. But before that they gave me some of my favorite tracks to play in the old Honda Accord. I remember watching the video and wanting a yellow shirt with a big black jagged line. Apparently I thought looking like Charlie Brown was pretty sweet, too.

11. "King of the Mountain" Midnight Oil
I've listened to this track for 20 years. Peter Garrett freaked me out, but this was a band that I invested some money in. I felt like I had 'ownership' of Midnight Oil. Looking back, I think I did because everyone I run into hates these guys.

12. "Timeless Melody" The La's
I almost left this one off. When my hall counselor came around Freshman year and asked all of us for our 'favorite track,' I gave him this one. (Wish I could get my hands on that Mix Tape.) My musical mentor (Neuburger) told me that these Liverpudlians were the new Beatles. "There She Goes" was no "Let it Be," but I thought the were bigger than Jesus at the time.

13. "Fall on Me" R.E.M.
I've always wondered if Al Gore likes this song. My bro had U2, and I had R.E.M. Mike Mills' backing vocals have always intrigued me. I think he's at his best on this one.

14. "Dune Buggy" Presidents of the United States of America
At one point I claimed that "If I could be part of any band it would be the POTUSA."
Hard to believe I said that, but after Dune Buggy I remember why. Brad Corrigan took some guitar lessons from Dave Dederer and always threatened to put me on the phone with him. Boy how I'd love to talk Bassitar.

15. "Mellow Mood" Slightly Stoopid
Andrew Lumpkin is more of an SS guy than me. I just thought this was a brilliant (please read sarcastically) collaboration here.

16. "Rush" Big Audio Dynamite II
Clearly a terrible band by their name alone. This almost didn't make the list, but Mick Jones is a legend, and this track represents on of my greatest 'Mix Tape Edits' of all times. The middle of the track is littered with some sampling nonsense, and I made one of the most seamless and sickest cuts back in '91. The tape is gone, but the song remains.

17. "Elvis Presley And America" U2
I could put any U2 track on here and be totally comfortable. I just thought I'd reveal a track that's haunted me for 15 years. 'Unforgettable Fire' is my favorite album, 'Bad' my favorite track, and this song is somewhere in the mix. This is one of those songs that highlights some of my favorite things about the band. Bono, Eno/Lanois/ and Larry Mullen. Not sure how they'll celebrate the military drumming of Larry Mullen Jr. when he's gone, but I'm guessing it might be with Sunday Bloody Sunday, and this song.

18. "When the Day is Done" The Samples
Another band that people love to hate. They came to Davidson in '96 and I saw this guy and this girl dancing, without shame, to some Boulder Rock. It's forever burned in my memory. I've always wanted to be able to cut loose at a concert . . . .

19. "Only You" Yaz
I went to Shawnee Mission South. The Girl I liked went to Shawnee Mission East. She liked Yaz . . . enough said.

20. "Untitled" R.E.M.
I like to call this track "11." Perhaps my favorite R.E.M. track off my favorite R.E.M. album. I recently learned that they switched instruments for this recording. Now you know what it sounds like when Michael Stipe plays the drums.

Fellow Junkies-

Let me start by saying that I take 100% responsibility for the lack of timeliness on dropping this disc and am open to any tongue lashings or paddlings that are deemed appropriate. After passing along my duties for the month of June as I made the treck from Chicago to Denver, I failed to pick up tragic's month on the other end. That said, I do not apologize for the fact that I am robbing October of its month because....well, its October and I am not sure that there is a better month for music in my mind. After I finally catch my breath from the summer of festivals and slowly slip into the haze of almost winter, I find myself doing little around the house but nerding out on pitchfork, elbow.ws, etc... That said, without further adieu, the track list for disc junkies 67(?).....its hard to keep track with the many missed months. The Allman Brothers. Done Somebody Wrong - Live at the Fillmore East.

When I first heard this album in its entirety I pissed my pants and forgot who I was for twenty minutes. Playing out of their minds.

Drive-by Truckers. 3 Dimes Down - Brighter than Creation's Dark.

I figured I would keep it in Georgia for one more song.

Delta Spirit. Trashcan - Ode to Sunshine.

If anyone wants to start a cover band let me know.

Wilson Pickett. Man and a Half - Hey Jude.

I dare you to find a song with more machismo.

Why aren't there songs like this anymore?

Spoon. Laffitte Don't Fail Me Now - The Agony of Laffitte.

Seeing the potential to sell records with an up-and-coming indie rock band, Elektra Records, along with A&R man Ron Laffitte, signed Spoon to their first major record deal, which produced their second LP, A Series of Sneaks. Unfortunately, after four months of low sales, Laffitte was fired and Spoon was ultimately dropped from Elektra. Angry with Laffitte (who had promised promotional funding) and the rest of the executives at Elektra, Spoon recorded a vindictively written two-song EP, immortalizing their broken deal. - Wikipedia

Rue Royale. These Long Roads - Rue Royale.

A husband/ wife duo. They will be at the Hideout in Chicago on March 20, if you are in the neighborhood.

Van Morrison. Sweet Thing - Astral Weeks: Live at the Hollywood Bowl.

Late last year Van did a couple shows where he performed the album Astral Weeks start to finish. Epic. He is doing encore performances of the show in New York and London soon. I am crossing my fingers for a Chicago show to be announced.

Dosh. Wolves - Wolves and Wishes.

I saw him do this live a few months ago. For a musician who lives and dies by the loop, it seemed like some bizarre form of torture to have the saxophonist play live, with no loop. I thought he was going to pass out. It was awesome.

Andrew Bird. Not a Robot, but a Ghost - Noble Beast.

A song by Dosh (above) with Bird providing the lyrics.

Electric Light Orchestra. Secret Messages - Secret Messages.

The song is the title track (and opening track) of the 1983 album Secret Messages. The song starts off with strange effects and backmasked voices (saying "welcome to the show") then a burst of morse code spelling out E.L.O. before the song properly kicks in. - Wikipedia

1901. Phoenix - Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix.

The newest song to be released from Phoenix's upcoming album. This thing has been delayed since Summer 2008 and now has a release date of May 2009. So French.

Best Songs of 2008

I'll be writing commentary on these at a later date. I just wanted to get these posted.

Picking songs is a whole different beast all together. Albums are easy b/c it's so easy to eliminate albums with great songs that have missteps here and there. I gave myself an hour to sort my iTunes by release date and pick out the songs that I enjoyed the most this year. So, needless to say this would probably change day to day...even hour to hour. But, you can drive yourself crazy trying to do this, so I thought it was best to try to be quick and painless.

One important thing to note is that I did not include more than one song from any artist in order to maximize the artist coverage. It's always fun to find new music, and if 3 of my top 10 were by Bon Iver (which would have been the case), it would make this a bit less interesting you the reader (i.e. Hayes---literally....the reader, as in the singular reader of this blog). So, in keeping with the Bon Iver example, while Re:Stacks was in my top 10, it fell under 'Lump Sum' (barely)---so it had to go.

Again, I'll be writing commentary and maybe my first ever 2008 superlatives soon--but I wanted to get this out before I become influenced by the blogosphere...

Here are my picks for best album. Obviously I don't claim to have heard a fraction of the stuff that came out in '08. These are just the albums that I personally listened to a lot and felt were the most complete based on listenability (i.e. I can put it on and let it rip without having to skip around). Look at it this way---if I were to buy 10 albums on vinyl this year (presuming that they did not come w/ digital copies as well), they would be:

Apologies on waiting to the last day to get it out. Nonetheless, here is the line up for June 08 Disc Junkies:

Phoenix- Twenty One One Zero: I too enjoy the ongoing tradition of starting these discs with a track 1 instrumental, so what better way to kick off volume 54 than with none other then the freshest release from the upcoming Phoenix disc. If the rest of the album follows suite I would not be disappointed.

Foals- Balloon- The debut album, Antidotes, from this most likely hipster British five-some seems pretty promising. Though I think this track is the highlight, there are a few other good tracks in Olympic Airways and Cassius

Frightened Rabbit- Heads Roll off- Saw these guys a few weeks ago with the French Kicks here in Chicago. Not only did they put on a great show, but they stole the spotlight from the Kicks... Hailing from Scotland a lot of people have tried to draw the comparison with Snow Patrol, I disagree, but take a listen for yourself. The lyrics to all of their songs are shamefully uncomfortable, but in some way it works. Other good tracks off the album: Keep Yourself Warm, Good Arms vs. Bad Arms, Backwards Walk

Headlights- Market Girl- Another show I saw recently. Liked the show a lot, but could have been more impressed with the new album they dropped back in end of march. Good song here, not sure what else they have to offer though..,

Jacob Golden- Out Come the Wolves- New Acquisition I picked up a few weeks ago. Enjoyed it, thought I would share it....cool harmonies and acoustic guitar featured. Slips into the singer songwriter acoustic whiney category, but I like none the less. Other good tracks: On a Saturday

Wes Montgomery- Impressions- Throwing some Jazz into the mix, I was recently introduced to Mr. Montgomery so my knowledge is limited, but I do know that I am a huge fan of this track and the classic jazz rhythms blended with the piano...

Battles- Tonto- They seem to be storming the festival circuit this summer... They are a bit out there with some ridiculous tech beats and looping. Watched a few live show youtubes and they were delightful. Other great track is ATLAS

Sigur Ros- Gobbledigook- I am fairly confident that we can all recognize the greatness of sigur ros, but nonetheless I threw on a track off the new disc. Its track one off the disc, which really gets the album going. Stays pretty upbeat as far as Sigur Ros goes...

Rogue Wave- Harmonium- Great opening track off of Asleep at Heaven’s Gate. Picked this album up on vinyl a few weeks and it has been catching on in a big way. Other great tracks: Lake Michigan, Chicago x 12

Islands- Creeper- This album dropped back in April or May I believe. Pretty great album band, not a huge fan live. I saw them in Madison, WI and had one of the weirdest experiences in my life. They played in a bowling alley with Parts and Labor and a local band, all of whom underperformed. If you take away the fact that the lead singer sports mime painted face and weird flashing buttons along with the extremely hipster crowd then I may not have felt the same. Regardless, not a must see show, but a must hear album

Cut Copy- Lights and Music- Big track off of the new album in Ghost Colours. I am not usually into the electronic stuff (though it may not show on this disc) but these guys are legit. The new album is making waves and I think the tune is definitely catchy.

Steel Train- Alone on the Sea- Song opens with a U2 reminicent grand entrance and only excels from there. Really like these guys, though I have yet to hear too much out of them. From what I gather they are rather young and currently also tearing up the festivals this summer. They just played Glastonbury in the UK too great critic reviews. They will be at Lolla in August so I will be sure to give an update.

Death Cab for Cutie- Your New Twin Sized Bed- The entire new album is self depricating awkward lyrics that ring a close bell with those of the great Clay Aiken’s “ If I were Invisible”. Regardless of lyrics, really liked the whole album, which is a lot to say because I have never been a huge fan of these guys. Saw them with Rogue Wave in June and they put on a fairly decent show. Worth taking a listen to the new album.

Steel Train- Kill Monsters in the Rain- See Above

Black Kids- I’m Not Gonna Teach Your Boyfriend How to Dance- These guys blew up pretty quickly back in March, but if you have not heard there stuff yet check it out. They too have hopped on the Festival circuit playing Bonaroo, Lolla, and I believe ACL.

Girl Talk- Play Your Part (pt.1)- Laugh if you must, this track is catchy and this dj is definitely gaining steam quickly. This guy basically just mixes everything from Paula Cole to Nirvana and everything in between. Something different if you are into it.

Lateef and Z-Trip- Overlord- I like..sorry

ELO- It’s Over- Not only is this one of the most outstanding bands of all time with some of the greatest youtube videos of all time..no joke....but its a great closer. This band is epic, and I hope we can all grow our appreciation. New Pornographers featured a cover of Don't Bring me Down on the most recent tour, and it was outstanding live.

Dan Deacon // Pink Batman
I like the tradition of starting these with an instrumental piece. Dan Decon has gotten a lot of press lately because of his innovative, but strange-ass style. Some of his music might drive you mental illness (listen to woody woodpecker) and others are beautifully arranged like this one.

Vampire Weekend // Mansard Roof
If you haven't heard these guys yet you've got your head in the wrong place. A mix between Paul Simon, the Beatles, and even Phish, they are putting together some really beautiful stuff in their own unique way.

Yeasayer // Sunrise
Another new one for me from a couple months ago - some good 80's echos here, but really nice, thick songs. Almost sounds like this could be on an old episode of Miami Vice...

MGMT // Electric Feel
Or was that eel...??

Fleet Foxes // White Winter Hymn
Don't even have their full release out yet - heard this (and hijacked it) on Pitchfork. Really nice.

Caribou // Irene
This whole album is awesome - I had a hard time deciding what to put on the mix.

Grizzly Bear // While you wait for the others
Here is another I hijacked off of Pitchfork - I think this is going to be a great album when it comes out.

Bobby Bare Jr. // Flat Chested Girl From Maynardville
The Chicago folks probably know this guy - comes from a great chi-town record label and he has had a few hits on the local stations (so I'm told). Not sure this was one of them, but its a good 'un.

Vampire Weekend // Cape Cod Kwassa Kwassa
Another...

Amadou and Mariam // Coulibaly
I am not one for the "world music" genre, but this African duo puts out some great riffs - even if they feel a little dated it is pretty amazing music. oh, and they're both blind.

Doug Martsch // Impossible
One of my favorite songwriters of all time, the founder of Built to Spill did a great solo effort a few years back.

Gregory Alan Isakov // The Stable Song
This is a local Colorado artist, but not for long. Kind of like Iron and Wine with a country twist, this guy has a great backing band and every song is beautiful. If you live in denver/boulder definitely check him out live. Westwords artist of the year in '07, i think.

Built to Spill // They Got Away
My favorite band of all time - this is their new single. This song starts out a bit rough, but the intro does grow on you, and the rest of the song is great - can't wait to hear the new album.

Ugly Cassanova // Things I don't remember
It amazes me how many Modest Mouse fans have not heard this album (side project).

Black Mountain // Tyrants
Lots of Pink Floyd influence here, these guys have put out a couple great albums - highly recommended.

Yeasayer // Wait for summer
Another yeasayer tune...

Wrigley's // Juicyfruit
Here is an epic one to end the mix... if you are between the ages of 25-40, you'll probably know every lyric to what i consider to be the greatest advertising jingle of all time. hell, its not a jingle, its an anthem - a summer-spirit-evoking masterpiece. This is the rare, unreleased extended version. Let it move you.

Very surprised this song was not picked for song of the year…like a Chicago headline after Lollapalooza: VEDDER THAN EVER!!!

2.) Kings of Leon – Black Thumbnail
Ok, you might be able to understand Caleb on the vocals, but the Kings are fucking royalty! They sound so tight and are clearly making an overwhelming campaign for the future kings of rock n’ roll…you’ve heard it here first!!!

3.) Bruce Springsteen – Atlantic City
This version is when he was touring with a 14-piece band in Dublin…his name is THE BOSS…nuff said…

4.) Dave & Tim – Eh Hee
For all of you that don’t like Dave Matthews, please take a listen. You’ll be chanting in no time…it burns deep in your loins.

5.) Harlem Shakes – Old Flames
One of my oldest and dearest friends plays in this up and coming band in NY. This is off their debut EP and they have a new disc coming in fall. Look for them in a 2-page ad in the front of the new Spin Magazine. Everyone is going to love the Harlem Shakes, they just don’t know it yet!!!

6.) Arcade Fire – Keep the Car Running
I took a long departure from this album, have revisited and it’s perfect. I mean that. This song always gets me going…keep the car running. BTW, check out the version with Bruce Springsteen on YouTube…it’s tits!

7.) My Morning Jacket – Gideon
One of my favorite quotes from Jim James (lead singer) when they were making this album was “yeah, we’re taking a lot of drugs and coming up with some really cool shit.” The Jacket fits perfect…try it on!!

8.) Sound Team – Handful of Billions
I was disappointed to hear that this band has since been disbanded. Needless to say, starts off like a soundtrack to an 8-bit Nintendo game and ends strong like bull.

9.) Okkervil River – Unless Its Kicks
I can’t put my finger on why I am infatuated with this song. It builds well, the playing is good, but nothing amazing. They synergize by forming some sort of mesmerizing rock haze and end in a classic jam. Listen…and then re-listen…

10.) Sam Roberts – Taj Mahal
This song is a breath of fresh air. It sucks you in and clears you head. Embrace it, share it, make it your own…it’s yours!!!

11.) Rolling Stones – Loving Cup
I am relearning the piano just to play this song. Give me a little drink from your Loving Cup…just one drink and I fall down drunk!

12.) Beck – Elevator Music
Play that funky music white boy. Beck you never ceasse to amaze me…good form my man…good form!

13.) The Strokes – You Only Live Once
Thank you for resurrecting tight guitar solos Strokes. Catchy, fun, grab a beer, strut your shit, rock out!

14.) Gomez – Ping One Down
That bass line is hotter than a fucking heat wave in Phoenix. Gomez is one of the most eclectic bands from the pasty person capital of the world, the United Kingdom.

15.) Menomena – Muscle’n Flo
This trio makes a lot of noise together and I swear clouds part and sun beats down when the church organ hits the airwaves.

16.) Franz Ferdinand – All My FriendsIt sounds so much like a FF song, they might as well have wrote the damn thing. Thanks LCD

It means 'Good Winter' in French---it also (in my opinion) means, good album. This guy (Justin Vernon) was playing in a band in Eau Claire, WI and they decided to take the plunge that every local band dreams of, and move to...North Carolina. Shortly after arriving they encountered some creative differences and disbanded. Everyone else in the band formed a new band, leaving Justin Vernon in the dust. He moved home to WI and headed up to the NW corner to his Dad's hunting cabin. While there he passed the days hunting his own food and chopping wood...oh, and recording an insane album. It's called 'For Emma, Forever Ago'---DISCLAIMER: If you're not a fan of the slow acoustic depressing stuff, no need to proceed.

DJ 49 Review

1. A Spire- Love this track. It's a 'broken down, strung out' response to Brian Hagen's 'Willow'. Never a huge fan of 12 minute songs, but this one is something that I listen to over and over again. I debated where to put this one as it may seem daunting to launch into a compilation with something like Spire, but I hope you all can agree that it's easy listening.

2. Requiem for O.M.M.2- Two recommendations from my disc, and the first one is to get into Of Montreal if you haven't already. Kevin Barnes is a freakshow, and his latest album 'hissing fauna . . . . ' is very lyrically depressing. So try The Sunlandic Twins if you're looking to make the leap. I think it's a bit like Freddie Mercury meets the Beatles to be honest. You'll recognize his song 'Wraith Pinned to the Mist . . . .' was picked up by Outback Steakhouse and it's that ravaging tune that's always in your head after those commercials. Download the original as it's incredibly good.

3. In Mind- I wanted to sprinkle some instrumental stuff in here and this one makes some brief lyrical headway with a bit of a Broken Social Scene sound. Thought it would be a good lead in to Feist.

4. I Feel It All- I must admit that I'm a huge fan of 1234. Must be because of her Broken Social Scene roots. You might recognize her voice on some of the BSS tracks I put on a DJ album two years back. I think Feist is a great songwriter and shows some real versatility on The Reminder. This is my favorite track. Perhaps because it reeks of BSS. Plus, not alot of female artists make their way into the Junkies Mix.

5. Queen of the Surface Streets- saw Devotchka live thanks to Leroy Hoard a few weeks ago. Denver band, and this is my second recommendation . . . . . Buy How it Ends. If you like the world music/folk/eastern european thing then this album is for you. Incredible top to bottom. They have a new one coming out in a few months. And you have to love a band that has a female tuba player.

6. Panda Bear- Haunting vocals, but great background/working album. Slightly experimental and long tracks, but this is the most user friendly song on Person Pitch.

7. Nantes- Of the same vein as Devotchka. Eastern Euro sound and a real refreshing world music spin. Beirut and Devotchka influenced my choice of families for the cover art, and the Vintage Robot came from the slightly electronic tracks that follow this one. Electronic meets eastern Europe.

8. Someone Great- Can't get enough of this one. James Murphy is so smart with how he assembles his music. I'm a child of the 80's, so this fresh electronic spin really is a gem. Saw LCD live this summer and it was so good. The guy can play the sticks and his lyrics are simple, and thought provoking. Very Jack Whitish in my book.

9. Believe E.S.P.- Deerhoof is hilarious to me. A small Japanese woman fronts this experimental trio. Friend Opportunity is there most recent and most listenable album. If you like this track you'll get into the other stuff.

10. Manitoba- Kind of like with Of Montreal, I could have chosen so many tracks from Tapes 'n Tapes 'the loon.' Incredible album that has this the complexity of Arcade Fire, the passion of Two Gallants, and a vocal relationship with Gordan Gano of the Violent Femmes. I guess I have three recommendations now.

11. Lazy Eye- I think these guys are SoCal, and you've probably heard this on the radio lately. I've been holding on to this track for a while and I think the build in this one is amazing. Great album called Carnavas.

12. Smells like Content- I can't take too much of the Streets, and I probably couldn't take too much of this, but thought is was a good mellow track to wind down some of the electronica, and a unique one as well.

13. Promenade- Interested to see what you think about this one. Promenade is (next to Bad) my favorite U2 song of all time. It's on Unforgettable Fire if you haven't heard it. So this is a very interesting cover in my book. Unless you're a U2 freak you've probably never heard of this song. Anyway, this cover goes out to Noobs and Clyde. I found a website that catalogues every song ever covered. Not really, but it seems like it.
I'm suprised if you made it this far, but again, buy Devtochka's 'How it Ends', Of Montreal's 'The Sunlandic Twins' and Tapes n' Tapes 'The Loon.'

Numero Uno The White Stripes - Icky Thump

Didn't know how else to do it . . . . my vote is based on number of spins. Icky Thump went round and round my cd player for a good long while, and it's still in the mix. Jack White is a lyrical savant of sorts. So simple, so clever . . . . all coming from the mind of a creative workhorse. This record has some very borderline 'silly' songs, but they keep it legit and baja fresh like it's mostly south of the border.
As for Meg . . . . acute anxiety? I'd be a little anxious too if the devil were staring over my shoulder. And sex tape scandel . . . . don't believe everything you read on the internet.

#10. Terence Blanchard's "Tale of God's Will (a requiem for katrina)"

I grew up listening to Jazz via my dad's stereo. Never thought I'd own my own Jazz albums, but I found this little gem from the 'post Wynton Marsalis era.' The guy plays his horn in air jordan's so it was right up my alley. Very moving album from top to bottom. Cool to read liner notes behind each track.

New Season, New Music

Fall is here and there are many new releases that I have been highly anticipating. I will keep this one shorter than my last post:

Kevin Drew- Spirit If (A)

Depending on how you measure your 'favorite' album of the year (i.e. most listened to, always in the mood to listen to it, most unique and interesting, etc)- I'm going to out Kevin Drew's 'Spirit If' in the running for that title. Kevin Drew is one of the many members of Broken Social Scene. This is basically a BSS album since they are the band- the distinction however is that all of the songs on this album are written by Kevin Drew (as opposed to a BSS album which is a collaborative songwriting effort). Supposedly this album is the first in a 'series' of albums that BSS is releasing featuring the individual members of the band. If the rest are half as good as this one, I'll be a happy guy.

Other albums of note with a song to get you started and a grade that means nothing.

Matt Pond PA- Last Night (C)

blurb: Not a fan of this album, or anything else by these guys except their last album. terrible live.

Jens Leckman- Night Falls Over Kortedala (B)

Disc Junkies Volume 44

Ok, before we kick this off I want to explain the cover art. Check out the this clip before reading any further.

1. Willow- GILBERT: I try to open every disc with an instrumental song to kick things off. This song was a great find to fill that spot. Gilbert is an individual from England who was unsigned when I first stumbled across 'Willow'. He has since released a song on the Shifty Disco label. According to his bio he studied classical music and composition at Oxford University and Goldsmith's College, before writing soundtracks for film, television and theatre for some years. I love this track, the layering, the piano, the strings, etc...it might be my favorite song on the disc.

2. Johnny Appleseed- JOE STRUMMER AND THE MESCALEROS: As the lead singer of The Clash, Joe Strummer carved out his place in music history. However, what gets overlooked many times is the great things that he has done with his various projects post-Clash. This song played over the opening credits of the HBO show 'John From Cincinnati'. The song was the PERFECT soundtrack for this incredible opening credits that featured grainy old surfing clips spliced together. Check it out here.

3. Man Overboard- KRISTOFFER RAGNTAM: This song caught my ear because of it's unique sound. It is not specific to any one genre, but it is pop in its truest form. Super catchy and a little offbeat, it's exactly what I think of when I think of Swedish pop musicians...which is often.

4. Trains to Brazil- GUILEMOTS: This is a guilty pleasure in a way. It's another pop song that doesn't really have any totally unique characteristics. However, when I started getting this disc together I was on a semi-mission to include as many songs with horns as possible. I love brass in a song, and this song has an excellent horn riff. It's catchy English pop music...and that's that.

5. The Underdog- SPOON: Again, horns can make the song. This is an incredibly catchy song that I actually first heard on the radi0 (when was the last time that happened). Spoon are indie vets from Austin that are full of great hooks and riffs. I love the way that this song builds at the end and ends with a bang.

6. Wild Mountain Nation- BLITZEN TRAPPER: Despite seeing BT on Zeke's disc, I could not help but include this track on mine. Zeke managed to 'steal' two of my recent favorites The National and M. Ward for his disc, but I couldn't let this song NOT get out there. Supposedly their recent album Wild Mountain Nation is a VAST improvement on their past effort (surprising a lot of people). This is a like a funky, country Flaming Lips...or something.

7. Real Long Distance- JOSH RITTER: I got Pearson's excellent disc in the day today as well marking the first ever unplanned dual disc (I was REALLY late...sorry!). As Mr. Trotter put it, there was a 'mystic Josh Ritter connection'. The AMAZING thing is that between the two of us we had 5 Josh Ritter songs, all from his recent disc 'The Historical Conquests of Josh Ritter' and we didn't overlap at all (...mystic indeed!). That speaks volumes to the depth of this album. It's a true breakout album from a very talented singer songwriter. Josh Ritter's previous efforts have been stripped down folky acoustic records while this one is a grand opus of sorts featuring a full orchestra, etc. It's Josh Ritter doing his best Yankee Hotel Foxtrot impression.

8. Weed Party- BAND OF HORSES: This is from BOH's debut (and only) album that came out last year. Their big hit was "Funeral', but the disc is loaded with great songs. 'Weed Party' is a My Morning Jacket-esque rocker that epitomizes the summertime to me. Great for driving...Look for their new album in the next month (MMJ has one as well so there will be no shortage of good ole fashioned hard rock out there this fall).

9. Ragoo- KINGS OF LEON: I know that KOL seem to show up more than almost any other band in DJ history, but I could not withhold this track because it's upbeat and fun to listen to. I really like their new disc and would have put more songs from it on here if they weren't already so well represented in the past.

10. Our Life Is A Movie Or Maybe- OKKERVIL RIVER: Another Austin based band that I am loving. For those that are familiar with the notoriously critical music review site 'Pitchfork', you know it's tough to get a solid rating. OR's most recent disc got a stellar review which caught my eye. I had heard them before, but never took too much interest in their slow ballads. This disc is high energy as are their shows (see my review below). The musical arrangements are great, but what strikes me the most is the vocals (very expressive and unique) and the fantastic lyrics.

11. All The Old Showstoppers- THE NEW PORNOGRAPHERS: From the new album 'Challenger', this is a standout track. Although I was slightly disappointed with the new disc, I really liked this track.

12. Heretic- ANDREW BIRD: This is the second disc in a row that I have included an Andrew Bird song. He is a local Chicago guy, so I may be biased. But, there is no denying his talent. He broke into the music industry as a violin player who gained noteriety with The Squirrel Nut Zippers in the mid 90's. Since then, he's been refining his sound and his identity. This song has great percussion and great choral fills from his Arcade Fire like chorus.

13. Two Days Short Tomorrow- TWO GALLANTS: You've gotta love the two man band. There was Local H back in the 90's and The Black Keys today (and many many others). They remind me of The Black Keys that are more rough around the edges. The songs are pretty stripped down and fueled by aggressive start stop playing and vocals. I like the under production on this song and liked the way that they kept me guessing the first time I heard it.

14. To The Dogs Or Whoever- JOSH RITTER: I've already talked about JR and his disc. This song is the most lyrically impressive song that I have heard in a LONG time. This is remenicant of Bob Dylan with some fantastic piano work.

15. July 4th, 2005- JASON ANDERSON: Jason Anderson is a very simple singer-songwriter that seemed pretty insignificant to me. His first couple of albums were very heavy and slow (not that that's bad). However, I got hooked on this song from his EP Tonight because of the high energy, foot stomping, call and answer, sing along chorus. The whole album sounds like he just got 10 of his friends in a room and started busting through his favorite Bruce Springsteen sing alongs...when consumed in moderation, I love it.

16. Hollywood Bass Player- JOSH ROUSE: For the last 10 years, this Nashville singer-songwriter has been compiling what I consider to be one of the most consistent catelouges of music out there. He has a gift for writing and arranging quality memorable songs. Aside from his semi-hit 'Direction' (which found its way onto the Vanilla Sky soundtrack), he's just great at writing good songs...lots of them. I like this story/song about a wandering bass player that moves from New York, to France, to Hollywood to be part of the rock n' roll scene.

17. Bullets- EDITORS: These guys are like a more dynamic Interpol. I really like their sound and I really like this song. There it is.

18. Insomnia- ELECTRIC PRESIDENT: I know nothing about this band. It took me a while to warm up to this song, but the more you listen to it, the better it gets. I love the electronic undertones and unique arrangement. It's something different.

19. Last Song- DNTEL: I should have probably made this the actual last song...whoops. Anyway, this is one half of the 'band' Postal Service (the other being Ben Gibbard of Death Cab for Cutie). If you can't tell, DNTEL is largely responsible for the Postal Service's signature sound. Since I try to slow things down at the end of every disc, I used this song to bring the momentum down without totally killing it....hopefully.

20. Eyes- ROUGUE WAVE: I always end with a slow track. I really like Rogue Wave and I had never heard this song before. It's a few years old and I really took a liking to it because it's so simple and it still drives it home for me.

I can't believe that I actually wrote all of this. Hopefully my efforts here will inspire lots of future posts to get this blog alive and kicking. I see a lot of momentum lately! If you actually read it-THANKS!

Peak Concert Season In Chicago

It's no secret that Chicago attracts most of the touring acts out on the road today. However, they seem to come in very short bursts bookended by months of Creed, Maroon 5, and Silverchair. But, when it's good...it's REALLY good. Here's what I've seen over the last couple weeks and a preview of what's coming up. Try to catch some of these when they make their way to your town.

Wilco at the Jay Pritzker Pavillion: Wilco has been a personal favorite for some time, and I've seen them many times. Still, the show at the JPP was significant because it was the first rock and roll band to play this incredible outdoor venue in the heart of downtown. Jeff Tweedy was in rare form (i.e. he was in a good mood) and the sound was excellent for an outdoor show. They reached back in the archives and dusted off material from A.M. and Being There.

Okkervil River at the Logan Square Auditorium: Okkervil River is an Austin based band that is touring in support of their most recent album 'Stage Names'. Great album, great live band, check them out! I also loved the venue. It is literally an old high school gym that the Empty Bottle started booking shows in. Picture 'Back To The Future II' when Marty McFly is tearing through his version of 'Johnny Be Goode'...classic. Also worth mentioning was the opener Damien Juardo an excellent singer/songwriter from the Pacific NW.

The National at the Vic: See below...they were great!

Iron and Wine at the Metro: After having seen the National the night before this show, I left feeling like I was missing something. Sam Beam (who is the only official member of the band...kind of like how LCD, or Badly Drawn Boy are one person), brought out 5 other long haired hippie types to bang out his usually quite acoustic folk songs. The problem was they they stretched out for way too long and usually leveled off into a trace-like jam with no real sustance. I am glad that I saw the show, but I walked away thinking that I&W is definitely the kind of band that I prefer to listen to on demand in my headphones when the mood strikes me.

Hope some of the Denver folks made it to this show - it was nothing short of fantastic.

Eric Bachmann must have had an interesting impact on these guys because when the lights went down the soundboard played an old Crooked Fingers song in its entiriety before the band took the stage, and before the encore Matt Berninger dedicated a song to him.

Don't miss them when they swing through your neck of the woods - if you have any interest in their music at all, seeing them live will almost certainly bump them up on your playlist. Probably my favorite concert of the summer.

Arcade Fire/LCD Soundsystem

If you haven't seen the Arcade Fire live, make the effort. They played with 10 (two violins, a french horn and a baritone, and pleasing pile of guitars, drums, and accordians.) The best way to describe it is a "Creative Unified Front." Zero 'solos', everyone is playing with more energy than Anthony Kiedis at an early Chili's show, and I've rarely seen so much instrument trading in a live show. Not so much a show . . . . . just some really talented musicians having a really good time on stage. If you have an appetite for a huge sound then the Arcade Fire ought to leave you full for weeks.

I must admit that LCD Soundsystem was one of the bigger reasons for attending the show . . . and James Murphy delivered. Despite a healthy set of man boobs, that guy is brilliant. Anyone who can take electronic/dance tracks and re-build the sound live gets the thumbs up in my book. Not a huge stage presence (what can you expect from an opener who only gets a portion of the stage to work with) but his vocal range was almost worthy of a Joseph Arthur comparison, and the set arrived at a percussive crescendo that should make Stomp jealous. Murphy can shed some wood when it comes to the drums, and he made some great choices for his live giggers. Two winners and worthy of a full ticket price for either.

if you know of Greg Brown - folk artist hero, this is his daughter. she has a solid, simple rhythm that really gets your toes tapping. her singing style is very loose - almost sloppy, but it ties so well to the clean singing of the instruments. The album title is "I Never Told" and it is a nice collection of songs like this one.

M.Ward * Chinese Translation
in my opinion, the most innovative, original artist of the past 5 years. when I was introduced M.Ward by my most-snobbiest music friend, he said "here's your new favorite artist." This is off his newest album "Post-War"... and it is fantastic. I highly recommend this beautifully written and performed album - probably my top album of the year.

Eric Bachmann * Man 'O War
if you have ever listened to Crooked Fingers, then you know Eric Bachmann. This guy is a great song writer, and he is very well respected in the independent scene. His solo album, "To the Races" is a chill(ing) album all done in his signature classical guitar finger-picking style. Another great album, definitely in my top 3 or 4 of the year.

Holopaw * Igloo Glass
Alt-country lovers, this one is a must - a great album of that genre that is definitely Tweedy inspired. Frontman is John Orth - a collaborator of Isaac Brock on other projects, and if you get the album, you’ll definitely hear some of that influence as well. Pitchfork Media rated this album an 8.2, which is almost unheard of.

M.Ward * Hi-Fi
an into to some of his earlier work from "Transistor Radio," this has always been one of my favorite M.Ward songs. Great example of his simple style and recording technique that is ironically very lo-fi.

Eric Bachmann * Genie, Genie
had to throw another one of his on here - same album. enjoy.

Sera Cahoone * Last Time
Sera Cahoone is (was) the drummer for the great indie rockers, Band of Horses. This is her solo effort - very nice folk album with a wonderful country twang to it.

The National * Green Gloves
Another of my favorite bands of the past few years - The National has some great work out there. Specifically their last album, Alligator is a huge hit... but more on that one later. This is off their newest album, “Boxer.”

Modest Mouse * Lives
Sure, we all know them - but their past 2 albums, although incredible, lack some of their discordant, pre-sell out past.

Jose Gonzales * Heartbeats
Another moving acoustic album titled "Veneer." this song is a great representation of what you'll find if you pick it up. Every song is memorable, a bit melancholy maybe - but a great album to zone out to.

M.Ward * Poor Boy, Minor Key
Sick of this guy yet? This one shows his versatility, but also his stronghold of the post-war sound (although this is off the album "Transfiguration of Vincent." Great piano, gravely voice... another toe-tapper, especially once the almost dirty-sounding guitar kicks in...

The National * Daughters of the Soho Riots
This was probably my favorite album of 2005. The rest of the album is quite a bit louder than this song - but it is such a great acoustic song, I had to include it. When I first got this album from that same snobby friend, I gave it a few listens... thought it was OK. Then I saw them live, and I was absolutely blown away. The album got more playtime through my headphones than any other for a long time after that show.

Jenny Lewis and the Watson Twins * The Big Guns
Jenny Lewis is radical, and her work outside of Rilo Kiley, in my opinion, is her best. She's a bit like Neko Case, but it seems like she has more fun when she writes her songs. But I'm not really sure what that means...

Great Lake Swimmers * Imaginary Bars
An interesting album - not 4 stars by any means, but it is pretty solid. Most of their work sounds like it was recorded in an empty silo or something, but it has a nice original, almost hollow quality to it.

You've probably heard this cover before... I put it on here cause it is a great way to close a mix. But more than that, Gary Jules has some nice work out there that is worth checking out.

First and foremost...I'm pretty excited to be a part of this prestigious group, I have heard the legendary tales of the elusive Disc Junkies. If you haven't already received vol. 38 it should be in the mail, and heading your direction. I wanted to take a few seconds to give a little information on some of the artists on the disc.

Foy Vance - this guy is a songwriter out of Belfast, he is one of the most soulful passionate musicians i've heard in a long time. In all honesty, I could of filled the disc with his music...but i thought that might not be well received. If you like what you've heard, I'd recomend a few other tracks "Gabriel and the Vagabond", "Indiscriminate Act of Kindness", and "Sometimes". He only has a limited amount of material released, but everything i've heard i've enjoyed.

Monte Montgomery - the song on the disc is a cover of a Little Feat song. This guy is one of the best technical musicians i've ever seen. He has a ton of stuff out, his sound is really poppy, but if you enjoy hearing good guitarists play, he'll blow your mind. His catalog over covers is pretty vast, but if you can find it track down his cover of Dire Straits "Romeo and Juliet"...it speaks for itself. He tours nationally, predominately in the south...great show if you can catch him.

Phoenix - ok, their french...other than that these guys are pretty much flawless. I saw them at ACL, and hands down they were the best performance that I saw for that weekend. The whole disc, "Its Never Been Like that" is great, i strongly recomend it.

Erik Mongrain - go to youtube, and search for this guy, seeing how he plays will help you understand why his music is so cool...again, another great thechnical guitarist.

Brightblack Morning Light - i think these guys have a cool sound, however, every song on there album sounds the same...i would give the album a big thumbs down.

Mofro - tons o' good stuff...

Soulive - great jazz funk...again, lots of good stuff...worth checking out if you'll be attending Lolla in Chicago

Last but not least

Toots and The Maytals - great old time reggae band, they recently release an album with guest appearances by a ton of awesome artists (Ryan Adams, Keith Richards, Trey Anastasio...)...good stuff

Pretty nifty, Trotter. I like it. Just gotta get the rest of the DJs posting to it.

Just finished listening to the latest disc (complements of Chicago Brian Hagen) all the way through. First impression was good. Listens easy and the cover art is catchy. Good stuff...need to give it some more play time before I can really comment though.

Surprised to be catching flack about putting some Tina Turner on my latest disc. How can you go wrong with one of the greatest female voices of all time belting out a searing cry for her man? That song also plays a prominent role in one of the greatest sports movies of all time as well. I bet Neuburger knows the reference. Anyway, that comment is especially painful coming from someone who devoted two tracks of his latest disc to the musical genius of John Denver. A question to da-buffalo....where exactly is the land of hush-a-by anyway?

i go to my mailbox everyday looking for some new tunes. back in may i found a disk with some tina turner and alice cooper on it. those selections really broadened my horizons.

Hopefully this will revive the Junkies and keep the list infront of everyone's face. Brian's cd for June should be in your mailbox soon . . . any word on when that was mailed out?

Rules of the Disc Junkies

Rule #1: Provide fellow "Junkies" with new music . . . whatever is in your CD player, or getting played on your iPOD. The idea is to introduce, or re-introduce fellow Junkies to bands, songwriters, and silky albums.

Rule #2: Don't be lame. You decided to join the junkies, so do your job to make it worthwhile. This includes blogging your comments and feedback during the month.

Rule#3: CD's are due at the by the 1st day of the assigned month. This Rule goes into effect August 1 of '05. If your CD is late then the blog is open to mad amounts of trash-blogging. CD's must be accompanied by original CD Cover Art. Choose any medium you like, and include the Words "Disc Junkies" on the cover with the volume number.

Rule #4: If you absolutely have too much going on to put together your mix, then it is your responsibility to arrange with the next person in line to take your place. If you exercise this option, you don't get to go next after them, you forfeit your turn and are bumped down to the bottom of the line.

Rule #5: If you fail to carry out rules 3 & 4 and all other members of the club end up without a CD at any time during your month, you are now in some trouble. You are bumped down to the bottom of the line, just like above; however, you will be put on probation.

Rule #6: Probation (pro-bay-shun); def. - member's first name on the blog will be changed to "Probation", denoting that said member will NOT be sent any further Disc Junkie's cd's until he takes the necessary steps to redeem themselves (see rule #7).

Rule #7: Freeing yourself from Disc Junkie probation is a simple process: Step 1: Ship everyone in the club 1 makeup CD mix sometime before your next turn. Once this requirement has been met, regular receipt of the Disc Junkie volumes to your mailbox will resume.

Rule #7: If you fail to carry out rules 3 & 4 a SECOND time, then you've just been erased. You'll be dismissed from the club and every member of your family, past . . . present . . . and future . . . will be black-balled from the Disc Junkies. Lo Siento, compadre.

Rule #8: You must fill out and maintain a blogger profile with a working email.

Rule #9: If you feel like your time has come and you are off to pursue an album career of your own, then you may exit the Junkies once your commitment has been fulfilled. Send out a CD to the club and then submit your resignation so that you can be replaced. And yes, you will be missed.
